Default Sure TK2050 and Phono Stage

I have a Graham Slee phono stage plugged into my sure tk2050 (tripath) amp with a 100k ohm pot in the middle. Even with the pot at nearly maximum resistance and the gain switches off on the amp board, it's pretty loud. If I plug an iPod in instead, then the volume is much more appropriate.
Is this perhaps the phono stage putting out higher voltages than the iPod, and might I be able to remedy this with a more resistant volume pot or is there some other solution?
It's a Gram Amp 1 stage incase that helps...
