Default Another Ebay Tamp Thread

I know there are tons of these thread out here, but I would like to focus on a particular amp.

Tripath TA2020 Mini Cute Class T Amp Amplifier Ipod MP3 on eBay.ca (item 290443156892 end time 08-Jul-10 03:53:09 EDT)

I was wondering firstly, if anyone had any experience in it. Secondly, do the components / description sound ok?

I did some research here on diyaudio, seems like there is a general acceptance of the ta2020 over a 2024. I'm not afraid to mod, my soldering skills are great but I would prefer to not have to source components. That being said, my enclosure skills are extremely pathetic, hence I'm trying to stay away from the arjen amp that is so highly rated here on diyaudio.

Thanks!

Here is the description / pictures linked.

No experience with it, but part of why it's so cheap is because you've got the 1/8" input jack and screw terminals for the speaker wires, must supply your own 12V power supply, and EMI filtering looks minimal.

This $100 Dayton amp has problems of it's own (really ugly job of reworking for one) but I like how key parts of the circuit are using surface mount devices, and look at all of the toroids used for EMI suppression:

lol. no offence, but this ebay amp seems to be build "cleaner" than the dayton. I do realize the 1/8 jack is for cutting costs, but all my sources are using 1/8 so its better for me. But you mention EMI filtering, which I think I will need, my "airspace" is pretty noisy. I've read someone who had an experience with a Sure Electronics Amp. 2*15W@4? TA2024C Digital Class-D Audio Amplifier+ AC DC adapter _Audio Amplifier and other Audio Boards_RF and Audio, Video Equipments_Sure Electronics' Webstore Is there such a big difference between a ta2020 vs a ta2024?

The EMI filtering is to reduce outgoing noise not to prevent incomming noise, so unless you are concerned about further pollution you shouldn't need to increase the filtering.

The filters do look quite small so may get hot if you play this amp loud for long periods of time. Their impedance may also affect the sound quality a bit. But I woudl get it running before you start to mess with it you may find you like the sound.

Regards,
Andrew

TA2024 can sound very good, in fact it's the chip that started the T-amp craze. I use tube-friendly speakers which don't drop below 6 ohms, and I don't need much power to drive them. In that setup, my TA2024 amp ($50 Dayton) sounds great, and not just "for the price", though I needed to perform a small modification for full bass response: As delivered by the factory, mine had undersized input coupling capacitors which rolled off bass below 100 hz or so. Restoring these to the larger values recommended by Tripath (~2.2 uf) really made it sing. I've spent many hours listening to the thing and really can't think of anything to complain about at all.

why would an amp manufacturer limit their caps to 100hz roll off? (its not a problem, as the ufonkens are probably going to get a 100hz roll off anyways). 4season, can you provide a link to your Dayton amp?

Oh you know, kids put on the hip hop and crank up the volume, then complain because the amp runs out of gas so soon. Never mind that it's trying to reproduce bass frequencies that their tiny speakers can't reproduce anyhow. I doubt that the designers ever seriously thought that audiophiles would be using them with $1K++ speakers, but that's exactly what happened.

And FWIW, they did the EMI filtering right on this amp, and it causes no significant interference at all.

this one looks exactly like the sonic impact... interesting, however shipping kills any deal to canada.
