The original schemetic with the original phase lead network gives a switching freq of 120kHz. The corner freq (-3dB) of your filter is about 50kHz (at 4.5 Ohm), this means about 20dB filtering only, very poor. The 1mm gap could be enough to protect your core from saturation, but you can have a very high ripple current at the inductor.
