Default Idea for a new project

Does this sound rational? To get my feet wet in class D. (cheap)
Sacrifice an old Hafler chassis for the transformer and heat sinks, to build a big honking sub amp. I hate to cut up a good amp, but you can't buy a transformer and box for what you can buy an amp for. Actually my B&K may be better suited to a D.

My other idea was to buy a junky pro-sound switcher (used) and tear it apart to see what can be improved to make it useful for hi-fi. Again, what you can get as a chassis and power supply for a couple hundred beats doing it from scratch. Either idea is to get a start to then apply the best thinking ( here, of course) on bringing it up to snuff.
