a 12AU7 stereo pre amp is available, operating from 12V DC. internally 42 VDC is created, therefore working on a harmless voltage. the board is small, 60 x 100mm. the seller is arjen helder, a dutch engineer in china. just look on ebay. it works with all kind of amps, not only class D.
short data: 11Hz to 253KHz ( 3dB ), max gain: 22dB, 90dB S/N, 11.5V to 14.4VDC, 170mA THD @ 750mV out: 0.15% believe it is : arjen_helder electronic

Wow, what a tradeoff to use an efficient amplifier just to waste heat for filaments.

yeah, i know, u are right. but how about a car and its efficiency? dont you have one? efficiency isnt all, what counts, otherwise we should shut down a lot of things, we like to do. as an engineer, i wish more efficient things, but its difficult to realize.
