I thought about including this in a thread that i already have but my guess is that this might be a good question for others as well. I have been searching all day for information on how to choose the right size transformer for class d. All information i have found is in regards to A or AB.
In my case using the NewClassD modules with 1 PSU. I will be powering 200watt max 89db sensitivity towers. |

in a nutshell, since ClassD is very efficient, you do not have all of the losses involved in A & A/B amps so you do not need to over size the supply so much.
You would do very well with a VA rating ~ the same as your desired output watts. so say for 200W per channel, two channels = 400W -- a 400VA transformer should do very well. Looking around at commonly available transformers would seem to recommend aiming for a 500VA model from any of the usual suppliers. even this is still conservative, since real music and general audio material will not push an amp to more than a few % of it's real rated output very often. (really 300VA would even be fine, but 500 will give lot's of headroom and a bit stronger supply ![]() -CK |
