Ok, this has got me stumped and yes I searched and didn't find anything on this subject.
I built a GC and used seperate 20K pots for volume. After listening to this amp for about a month now and on a whim I bought the glassware stepped attenuator. I scaled the steps from the 100k range that comes with the kit to 20K for the GC. http://glass-ware.stores.yahoo.net/aikampstepat.html I use this amp in my garage (24' x36') and at full volume the GC has never distorted and was extremely loud but not uncomfortable. When I replaced the pots with the attenuator the sound was still undistorted but much louder. At full volume just after a few moments I couldn't take it - It was hurting my ears! (same CD deck and albums) Any theories as I find this interesting? Nothing else has changed. |
