Default 4702 without powered external components

Can the LM4702 chip be used like the (lower powered) LM3875 and similar:

- power supply and signal on the input side
- some passive components on various pins for various reasons in the middle
- and a loudspeaker on the output side

?

Every post I read here about the LM4702 discusses external powered components, like a darlington output stage, etc.

What kind of performance degradation or other issues could I expect if I were to omit the external powered components?

The LM4702 is not a power amp. It is a DRIVER chip, which needs an output stage. This chip cannot drive a speaker, so you cannot use it as a power amp without the output stage.

You may want to take a peek at the data sheet, it's spelled out there.
