I am thinking about trying one toloroid. and given the math of total number of channels, x 1.5 = the va requirements of the transformer i come up about 510VA requirement, 612 if you plan to us all six channels. I only intend on using five channels.

here are the two pieces from PE

both are rated at 625VA and one is 25v the other 30v. will this work? and if so, which one would be better? I could also consider two of the 330VA versions

or finally I could power each board on it's own 250VA transformer

I am asking because I am honestly lost.

Voltgae requirement depends on your speakers, i.e. 4 or 8 ohms.
30 is on the high side for both. Especialy when we try to keep things cool

I would say you could go down to 22 or 24V at 170VA per channel, or maybe a 250VA for a stereo set. It will still work with an even weaker supply, but clipping, and crossover distortion behaviour will be affected.

Going the single tranny per amp has alot of benefits, inlcuding modularity, you can easily remove a channel for repairs or upgrades without affecting everything else.

It will also do the most you can for channel seperation.

Also you will avoid the huge inrush current those giant torroids would cause. and the associated avoidance circuits.

Check out ebay for toroid and toroidal before you hit the profit mongers first.

I'm sorry...you didn't get the memo? We're up to 7.1...better get some more trannies and more amp kits :D

yeah, but i only have five speakers right now. 7 speakers is in the near future though.

looking at this, I am thinking maybe it would be better to just build three seperate 2 channel amps. Each having a seperate power supply. I would think that everything would be very simple then. Just get similar looking cases, and everything would be all set.

what does everybody think of that?

Go for it!

okay, to resurect a dead thread...

I have decided to just build seperate stereo amps, basically my plan is to do this as simply as possible. I intend on starting with a single Peterdaniels kit. If I understand it correctly the only things I need in addition to that kit is the following.

Tororoid
Case
heat sink

correct?

so basically if I purchase one of his kits that has the ability to power 4 channels of stero, and I get a pair of toroid's that are like 250VA at 25V. I should expect something in the neighborhood of about 60w per channel.

I have seen some websites where people put large caps in the amps as well, do they put them in between the toroid and the rectifier board?
