does anybody have any ideas for a simple amp using the lm 386

follow the reference design in the datasheet. It wil work fine. Not much tweaking available or neccessary. just make sure to put a capacitor (any value from 10uF on up) from V+ to ground. This chip runs fine from a battery or a unregulated wall wart (linear or switcher). Pretty good sound as long as you don't clip and stay within specs. You can even bridge them, but you might let the blue smoke out
