Default Lovely Tranny Found

Ok, that subject sounds like a bad personal ad from Miami or San Francisco huh? HA!!! Anyhow, I ran across this at my local electronics junkyard/wharehouse and from memory thought it might work. But now I am thinking I wasted my money. This is a beefy tranny, with a nice built-on wiring box that when the top is off, reveals a nice wiring "buss" I guess is what it would be called. Anyhow check these pics out...

...and it is in brand new condition to boot. As for the label, it reads:

Pri.V. 125V
FREQ: 400
Sec.V. 26.5V
Watts: 250
Type: H4845
Electran MFG Co
Chicago, ILL USA

Does the 400Hz freq mean this won't work an LM4780 project and was a waste of money? I didn't notice that part until I got home.

Thanks for the input...

Ok, as I figured...the 400Hz thing throws it completely out of whack for what I need here. Ahh well, it was fun while it lasted...HA!!!

At 60Hz it's not going to whitstand much more than one seventh of the rated voltages before the core saturates. It's intended to work with a 400Hz mains supply, like the one used in planes.

Yeah that I now know. Oh well, I saw how clean it was and read the other specs and thought hey, this is the one I wanted. So through the drooling and such I shelled out $15 for it. Oh well, maybe I can find someone who may have a need for it somewhere....maybe.

Thanks,
Noidster

Chuck...

400 Hz is for the military, they can get a lot in a
small package and very hard to sell.

I've made mistakes in buying transformers and
variacs. At least with the variacs you can use them
at DC voltages, not in the transformers

More especailly, 400Hz is used in aircraft where the reduced core size saves weight.
