Default gainclone as an amp for bassguitar

Hi,

My son and I built a gainclone some time ago, based on Peter Daniels boards. The other day he asked me if he could use this one in a bridged version as an amp for his bassguitar. He planned to replace the RCA input and speaker connections (output) with two jacks (in and out respectively). He will use the volume potmeter we already installed as a "passive preamp" with the boards.

Will this be ok? Anyone with experience from such a project?

Best wishes
Jan Ove

Guitar pick-ups don't produce much voltage out. You'll probably need to add a gain stage. An opamp wired for a voltage gain of 10 or 20 should do.

Guitar guys like to have tone and distortion controls. There is a pretty easy to build device here: Practiceman
You can make all sorts of parts substitutions. In this case, just replace the LM386 output stage with your power amp stage. Make sure the power amp stage has a hefty power supply and a good heatsink.

I would say if using a lm386 based device do something even easier like the littlegem off from runoffgroove.com. On that same note, I don't think thats a good idea. I simple booster would do the trick, like the LBP-1 on tonepad.com and generalguitargadgets.com I myself am building a lm3886 based guitar amp and plan on using a LPB-1 into 3 band fender style passive tone stack and then that into the power amp. For some good stuff, like the schematic for the 3 band tone stack, feel free to check out diystompboxes.com and go to the forum.

Default Thanks

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will look into them more closely. They seem promising.
