Hi, I bought Brian's gainclone kit and finished construction with 18-0-18v 300va transformer. I also had Rod Elliot's P97 preamplifier with power supply P05 that provides +/- 15v, that had its own transformer.
As I decided to put them together I wonder if it is possible to use a single transformer due to enclosure space. Since P05 can be operated with only one AC supply plus GND, I hooked one secondary AC and its GND of the gainclone transformer to P05. To my surprise, one of the diode in the rectifier board blew out, basically exploded!. I replaced the diode and same thing happened. Can anyone suggest a better and safer way to handle this situation? Using one transformer for both pre and power amps may not sound fancy but I'd like to have simpler and tidier internal layout with one toroidal. Thanks in advance. |

could be your main supply is blowing the diodes it may be that there is a short through the diode on part of the ac cycle
fortunately with that 18v PSU u can use the DC out from your main supply which is around 24.5 v? you take out the rectifiers from the preamp PSU. this is from his page. about the psu if you need to, it may be powered directly from an existing source of DC - make sure that the input voltage is below +/-30V under all operating conditions - this is important. For this connection, the rectifier diodes must not be used, and the loss of AC detector won't function unless it is connected separately to a source of AC. This option is recommended for experienced hobbyists only, although the construction guide does have some additional information. end quote you may need to put little heatsinks on the regulators if they get hot depends on how much current your preamp uses. also if you use DC you cant use the muting relay circuit. but for GCs i doubt you need it. |

Maybe you can add a voltage regulator like the 7815 on the 24v DC rails. It can handle 1-3A depending on enough heatsinking.
btw, I use Rod Elliott's Death of Zen pre-amp with my GC and separate PSUs. I am really happy with that setup. |
