After looking at this thread, I was wondering if there is a AC3, DTS, Dolby, MP3,ect.. Decoding chip/project out there to intigrate into this. I've seen toslink-analog projects, so it would be nice if I could have all of this in one. I did a search and it didn't look as if a decode chip was out there at the time, has this changed? Any info would be great, or even a simple yes or no.
Thank you Steve |

Your answer is no, there is currently no DIY HT decoder out there. Some searching on the forum might have helped you find that out. There are projects in progress, maybe something polished will come out, maybe not.
There are DIY techniques to get multiple speaker outputs, but all are analog domain, stereo source. The simplest is http://sound.westhost.com/project18.htm You can add on circuits to embellish the effect, such as a "wide" function on the main front pair, an LF rolloff on the center channel, and preferably a better subwoofer output filter.

Your best bet is to use a dedicated PC with a 5.1 soundcard. The Soundblaster Audigy line is a good way to go.

I have an Audigy, I guess I'll use that. The reason I was wondering is so I could use the Toslink output and bypass possable noise issues in the PC, and also to be able to use the digital output of my current DVD player.
Thanks for the info. |

Could you buy a cheap HT amp ( hyundai or something) and then bypass the amps so you are only using the decoder and possible the DAC's?
Just a thought

You could look at one of these, similar performance to PC card based broducts, I would asume without the noise A PC injects...

Thanks for the sugestion, I'll have to search "DDTS-100" on the forums/google and see what others have done. This looks promising as a stand alone unit, not requiring the PC.
