Didn't you already create a thread regarding this? This isn't the right place for preamp discussion anyway...

diysmartdeep21,

This is not a chat room. The goal is not to post the same one-line questions in tons of different threads. The goal should be to foster discussion of audio-related issues.

Questions like "what is the best X" are at best juvenile, and at worst an invitation to a flame war. There is no best audio ANYTHING, any more than there is a "best playright" or "best symphony."

Now, that doesn't mean everything is a black art. If you want relevant replies, try something like this:

"I am looking to build a set of speakers for 75% HT, 25% music. I want to build 7 identical speakers. I like the sound of ribbons and silk domes. I like poly cones for mids. I think I want a 3-way design. I am a beginner/experienced/expert constructor. I like low-order slopes, and am not interested in active monitors.

Can someone suggest some good driver choices in the $250 range for mid+tweet? "

Now that kind of post provides a starting point. There are still a huge number of variables, but at least we can start talking about your question.

In contrast, look at your question above. You aren't even comparing the same things (two soundcards versus two preamps, with no model numbers). You don't specify anything about how you will use them (music? HT?) or what your sources will be (PCM? DD? DTS? analog?).

If you limit yourself to rational questions, and try to at least SEARCH for the basics (how hard is it to google LM4780?), you will find this forum to be much more valuable.

Alternatively, you can continue posting willy-nilly and end up on my (and from what I've seen so far, many other people's) ignore list.

I will attempt an answer (and see what ensues).

If you cannot tell the difference between Krell, Bryston, or various Audigy units..., buy the cheapest.

If you can tell the difference, you shouldn't be asking the question.

:)ensen.

But which is the best, I want the best. And I want others to think it's the best. I want to be content knowing it's the best so I can tell others so. - aka Audiophile Syndrome.

The 'b' word should be banned in the forum me thinks.

First, I don't understand why are you comparing a soundcard with a preamp.
If you wanna make the soundcard the center of your system and make your analog sources pass by cheap ADCs, Dacs and analog stages, then go ahead.
If you want your "preamp" to have a digital volume, go ahead.

Second, "ultimate" doesn't exist, and nobody with a common sense is going to tell you what's the best thing in the world without testing everything that exists.
Impossible task...

Third, and most important: how much money do you have to spend on the "ultimate" preamp?
