Calling all UK froumers
I'm thinking of building a gainclone using BrianGT's kit. Does anybody have suggestions of reasonably cheap pots available in the uk? I'm thinking of those supplied by the standard electronic components suppliers, i.e Farnell, RS, Maplin. What value should I use? Also should I go for 18V or 25V secondaries? Cheers Mike |

Or go for the 'best' and build a stepped attenuator!
(Approx cost 12 UKP)

Hi parrymike,
This thread has a lot of information and opinions regarding pots. "Silver-Carbon" Pot ex Tawan - Photo - & ignore my ugly Pinky! The pot mentioned by Joe is available from Jaycar in the UK. Thanks

It certainly looks like a nice pot. Pick the 20K type. Carlos |

Thanks for all your replies.
TO Nuuk: I've just about got permission from my better other half to build the amp, there is no way she would agree to a volume control with 12 volume steps. Does anybody have any cheaper alternatives to the ALPS pot? I must admit it does look nice. Also, any opinions on my tranny? 18V or 25V secondaries? Cheers |

Farnell do the Piher pots but it seems that they are not much liked on this forum. With the NIGC working best with a 20K pot, it limits the choices somewhat.

I would go with NUUKS diy attenuator, it gives far better results than any pot including Panasonics for audio types,Noble,Alps blue etc.
I personally can't stand those Alps blue If you want cheap then theres the R-ohm types |

I've only tried the Vishay Sfernice P11 10k pots (£4.33 from RS) and they sound good, but channel matching at the lower end ranges from bad to awful IME. I had to buy three before getting an acceptable one and I believe this is common with many cheap pots. - a problem you won't have with the stepped attenuator.
