What is the differerence? TF is "isolated". what does that mean and is it important?

Yes, one chip (t suffix) requires that you use an insulation pad and plastic washer to keep the chip isolated from the heatsink. The other is already insulated and just screws/bolts to the heatsink as it is.
The insulated (TF suffix) version is reported to not transfer its heat to the heatsink so effeciently as the non-insulatd version. But in practice, this shouldn't be an issue. The only time I would be worried about the temperature with a Gainclone, is when using the regulated power supply that appears to make the chips run at a higher temperature.
