I've been partial to vacuum tubes for quite awhile, but am becoming increasingly interested in the GC phenomenon. Can they be effectively used to power a 2-way Karlson K15 type speaker utilizing JBL 2226 15" woofers and 2426 compression drivers/2370A horns(16 ohm, 100 + db 1w,1m)? I don't recall seeing anything like this, so thought I'd throw it out to the experienced builders. I'm interested in the kits at chipamp.com, perhaps the lm4780 dual mono kit. Thanks for any configuration tips, recommedations, etc. Jerrod

Hi Jerrod
I really don't have an answer to your question. The reason I'm replying is because I have the idea now for quite a while to build me a Karlson K15 to match my Iwata horns (still in progress) and I'm trying to get as much info about this strange speaker as possible. Cheers Walter |

Jerrod, My main speakers are 12 ohm, 94dB@1W/1M. I use these speakers with a tube amp with about 4.5 WPC RMS. The drivers are much smaller than yours (4" line array) and of course a little less efficient and a little lower impedance but my GC drives them just fine. If your cable/speaker load is very inductive you might consider adding a zobel to your GC. There have been posts regarding GCs not doing well with highly inductive loads. With all the speakers I've tested I've used heavy gauge (12AWG) oxygen free copper cables but nothing more exotic than that and I've had no issues without a zobel.

The 3875 gainclone drives my pair of 98 dB efficiency 16 ohm full range speakers with ease. Note the FR speakers has no crossovers.

I am using my Gainclone monoblocks on my Oris Horn reference bass. The Bd-Design bass drivers are 16 ohms and about 100 db.
I am using Brian's LM3875 boards with Peter's chassis. They work extremely well. |

I also tried Brian's Gainclone on my 98 dB full range speakers. There is ample power for the speakers. Note that my full range speakers have no crossover.
