MUR860 equivalent

Hello,

I live in Kerala, India where it is hard to find the parts to build a gainclone. I've still managed to get most of the parts except the recommended MUR860 diodes. Is there a more commonly available equivalent for this component? Perhaps a fellow DIYer in India could suggest a place in India where the MUR860 might be available?

Thanks!

Mahesh

I don't know if this helps, but it might be worth a shot.

Is it possible for you to get samples from On Semi or Fairchild?

I ordered 20 samples from On, they charged $15 US for shipping. They came from Singapore.

I ordered a dozen RURP860 samples from Fairchild, no charge. Both arrived by courrier within a few days.

Strange how it worked out, but in quantities of 10's they're $1.35 cdn each plus shipping from Digikey. So the 20 I got would have cost $35 cdn instead of the $20 cdn I paid for shipping from On. All in all it was the most expedient solution for me.

Other places like Newark, Arrow, Future didn't have any better prices, at least as far as I remember.

Hi Mahesh,
I can get you parts available in Chennai. I couldn't find MUR860 but they have MUR1660. I will be going to the market to get some rectifiers for my Gainclone which currently uses a 10A moulded bridge.
By the way MUR 1660 is two diodes with the anodes connected. Apparently we can use these in parallel.
I will also look for 10A Schottky diodes.
Cheers,
Ashok.

It is tempting to use this facility. But it is not clear if this is right. Possibly they send free sample to companies only, for a future bulk order. I do not know if this advantage should be used for personal use. Anyway, this is my personal feeling.

Free samples.

Its a free market. Anyone can ask for samples.
The chances are that you may not get them if the supplier is not convinced that you are a genuine user and could possible help them in getting orders for the component in future. They will also probably follow up with emails to see if you found them useful and where you were using them.

Even as an individual you could be useful if you were developing a design that could be commercialised . They need to be convinced about it.
The only situation where it might not be ethical is when you fib about your intentions.
You could very well say you are building an experimental amp.
Cheers.

Thanks for all the friendly replies!

Thanks! Cochin is developing fast - when I moved back here from the US I didn't expect that I will get a fast DSL connection here...

Glad you liked the pictures. Hope you will make a trip to Kerala some time.

Thank you for offering to help - I'll email you.

Mahesh, just a thought. If you have friend or family in Delhi, you could try the Lajpat Rai Market, near the Red Fort in Old Delhi.

Or try Vikas Hybrids Ltd (I think in Rajastan, maybe in other places). From what I'm told, they had some association with Motorola (now ON Semi, who make the MUR860).

;)

Ashok,
Thank you very much for the clarification. In fact I am about to start my first GainClone project with LM3886T and NE5532 as buffer and DC-servo. After I read your posting I felt confident and did order some sample of rectifier from ON Semi. I had to pay US$20 as a postal and handling charge.

Thank you again...
