Are active xover filters placed within the speaker box or it placed outisde on a separate elclosure outside the box?

Both is the answer!

However, I prefer not to put even passive crossovers in the loudspeaker box so my recommendation is to keep them out!

active crossover before amp. so they can go in a box if the amp is in the box. but you can also place them externally. you don't need it to be inside the box in anycase, but if the amp is in the box, well, it saves space and wiring to place it inside becuase you have 1 set of inputs instead or 2 or 3 sets. likewise you'd have less long signal cables.
