Default Would it 'hurt' an amp to load it with more than 8ohms?

Say if i want to connect several speakers in a series and parallel combination where the total load became more than 8 ohms, does this have a detrimental effect the same way loading the amp with less than 4 ohms does?

Generally, a higher resistance load puts less stress on the amplifier, which is a good thing, the opposite of a lower resistance load.

The disadvantages are reduced power output (theoretically an amp will deliver 1/2 power into 16 Ohms compared to 8) and slightly increased noise.
