2 subs, each with dual 6 ohm coils. The manual says that the coils are 5.4 ohms.

So if I go with an amp per coil, I would need 4 chips per amp, and a total of 16 chips. Would 4 be enough per coil? The current thru each side of the bridge would be ~14 amps, so each chip would be handling ~7 amps. Is that ok?

my opinion is that you should look into using more tradiditonal amps. chips are great for getting huge numbers of channels and getting small size, but high power isn't really the forte. you can get a good deal of power with the BPA type schemes, but after a while you're just making a much more complex amp.

the 3886 seems to have an output current rated at 11.5 amps. i'm guessing they assume a fairly good heatsink. possibly you could use 6 chips for a 3ohm load. not entirely sure that works at +-35V though.
