Default LT338 compared to LM338

Hi,
I just came across the LT338 on the linear web site. Google doesn't reveal any other references to this product, which Linear claim is an improved version of the LM338. Has anyone here used this chip?

No, I did not, but the differences are not that huge. According to the datasheet, LT338 is improved in the way of the tighter voltage reference tolerance, so the output voltage can be more precisely predicted in comparison with the LM338. Not really important in this application IMO, but the datasheet also claims somewhat lower noise of the LT338, and this may (and may not) be more important.

I think I noticed that the output impedence was lower at higher frequencies, which should be beneficial.
Whilst we're looking at this chip, can it be treated in the same way as the LM317 in regards to regulating higher voltages than 32v?

Arnie,

Linear gives only one output impedance graph that refers both to the LT and LM part and, else than the dip at 100Hz, the graph is in agreement with that provided by National. Note that the Linear’s graph which shows the impedance with Cadj=10uF includes the effect of 10uF output cap as well.

If your question is about the safety limit defined by the differential and not by the output voltage, the answer is yes.
