Hi-
I'm in the process of building my second amp using LM3875 and this time I want to utilize a preamp. I've noticed that some people put buffers in which I guess makes sense for turntable sources...I guess I'll put one in for fun even though I'm only really going to be listening to CDs. My main question is why are there almost no amps with tonal control? I realize that the chip is well balanced, but I really can't find any good info on the subject. Have people tried tonal controls? What was the result? Why do most people not even think twice about them? Thanks for your time, Doovieman |

The debate over whether to use tone controls has gone on for a long time.
With the GC's minimal number of components, it seems a shame to add the extra components for a tone control circuit. But, it is really up to the individual to decide for themselves. Some rooms or ancilliary equipment make a tone control more useful than others. In short, my advice, if you are building a preamp, is to add in a tone control circuit that you can switch in or out of circuit and decide for yourself it is better with, or without one. (And then report your findings back here ).

Thanks for the replies...I don't see why tonal controls would degrade the sound quality at all (if implimented properly of course)...but then, I don't subscribe to the "the more components the worse the sound" theory. I would like to use a switch though I'm worried that it will introduce too much noise and thus negate the experiment. I think that waht I will do is put in bypass points on the pcb and simply resolder...I'll report back when it's done!
