Default Gainclone quality..?

Hi folks, for my first post I was going to get some advice on a pair of SC480 modules I've put together but now I've got this gainclone bug!

Jaycar (AU & NZ) sell a kit based on a Silicon Chip article back in 1994. I'm wondering if these kits are worth the purchase or am I better off getting a kit from briangt.com?

Jaycar kit: jaycar kit

Kit is in short form with pcb, LM3875 and electronic components. No bridge rectifier. $27 p/module.

Thanks for your advice

Interesting, this jaycar kit uses that inductor wound around an output resistor. my first time to see that used anywhere.

And I duno where the feedback resistor is, but it's not close to the chip

You can see it on the datasheet.

Well thats what i mean, I've seen it there, and I've heard people talk of it but never seen it actually used.
Just interesting is all.

Have you seen the Leach amp? It's a pretty well known discrete amp that uses an inductor wound about the output resistor...

Thanks for replying fellas.

I'm going for one of those snazzy red jobs (Brian's)

I made an error, too, the Jaycar kits actually come with the LM3876 - sorry.

If you have 8Ohm speakers go for it.
Having inefficient or 4Ohm speakers you might wanna wait for the LM4780 group buy as it delivers more power into 4Ohm loads.
That kit won´t be much more expensive as the "old" kits.

Default coils around resistors

Maplin used to do a 150 W mosfet amp kit that used the same idea. I ordered some pre-assembled (lazy as I was) which arrived without the coil, so I had to wind them myself. Unfortunately, this was after my friends tweeters had expired due to the hf oscillation!

Hi joensd.

There's still alot I don't understand in regards to electronics and because of that, good sounding audio.

I've got a pair of fairly recently rebuilt Dali 1A's (small bookshelf) with 89dB sensitivity @ 8Ohm which I believe to be okay. That should probably be a question

The amp and speakers will only be mated to a entry level Toshiba DVD player anyway, unless it sounds magical and deserves better matching.

Essentially I like the idea of having something I can experiment with, or rather, rip off the suggestions of other people to see if I can better the sound (oh so subjective) to my liking. and to learn all the way without busting the bank.

Maplin, eh? I'll have to look into that. I may as well as reading what all you blokes are saying/doing it doesn't appear that this is going to be the last amp I build if I get the bug, does it!

So, thanks again

Always a pleasure learning
