Iam planning to make a gainclone for my father who primarily listens to tape as most of his old recordings are in that medium.
Can I use a gainclone directly with a tape deck as a source? Do I need a preamp for this? I don't have a deck with me to check but I feel that the output voltage from the tape would be low. Can anybody shed some light on this?
thanks,
Dinesh

Yes, you can.

You can use a tape deck directly with a gainclone (at least the ones based on Brian's boards) without the need for a preamplifier. My first tests of my gc were with an old cassette deck and it worked fine.

To date I have used-
* an old cassette deck from Sharp
* a tuner
* a Sony CD player
* an inexpensive DVD player
* an electric guitar (with a quarter inch to RCA converter jack)
all without the need of a preamp and they worked well.

In addition I have used my turntable feeding through a phono preamp and it sounds great.
