Just wondering what the normal value pot you guys are using on Gainclones. I guess 50K would be the upper limit, and maybe 10K for the lower limit?

I used what I had in the drawer, a 100K stereo log pot. It seems to be working OK and the amp sounds good.
I only finished the amp on Wednesday evening but I have about 6 hours listening time on it already. Nothing weird happening, no over heating, no oscillating or anything like that. I have been thinking of making a shunting volume control using the same audio pot but as this one seems to be working I may not "fix" it.

Does it controll volume for most of the rotation, or do you have to turn it half way just to get a descent volume?

I have it installed so that maximum attenuation is at the 7:00 o'clock position and full volume is at the 5:00 o'clock position. My normal listening position is between the 8:00 and 9:00 o'clock position and by 11:00 o'clock it is very loud and I've not yet turned it up past 12:00.
Control at the lower volumes is very good with fine control. Selecting an appropriate volume is very easy. The speakers I'm currently using are probably about 90dB efficient.

i use a dual 250K linear slider pot. works fine.
altho, when i had my old 97dB efficient speakers (P.A.) and used my Technics cd player as the source, the volume control was almost ineffective - either the amp was right down or frikken loud! changing the speakers to a more standard 87dB fixed that tho, the slider now has precise control over the full length |

Choice of volume control depends a lot on whether you have an inverted Gainclone or a non-inverted type.
To get the best performance from a GC, I suggest using a stepped attenuator. Fo more information on this subject, refer to the GC FAQ page on Decibel Dungeon.
