Do you have an embarrasingly basic question to ask?
Don't worry, we all have to start somewhere Have a look at our (ongoing) Gainclone Glossary thread as a first reference point...http://www.ampchipdiy.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=224 And if you can think of a useful definition that will help newbies/beginners then maybe you could consider posting it (here or there) so we can copy and paste it...preferably it should refer specifically to our beloved Gainclones, be they inverting, non-inverting, buffered or not.
