Is there any sonic penalty to using ribbon this way?

yup, oscillation, i tried this with the lm1875 and the chips oscillated badly

it'll work on the condition your ribbon cable is no longer then 1 - 2 inches AND you will NEED to solder the 0.1uF bypassing caps directly to the chip just like the feedback resistor

then it should be alright. on th eamps i've built on perfboard i've had to shift the even numbered pins out to the side so they're ona seperat track, the wires for this are only an inch tho and i've never had any problems
