Are you saying that you have 35 volts DC across the speaker terminals? If so then you will be needing soe new speakers.

The first things to do is check your power supply. If you are using a transformer with 18 volt secondaries, you should have rails of +/- 27-28 volts DC. If you use a transformer with 24-25 secondaries, the rails should be 36-37 volts DC.

If you have the correct supplies, make sure that the power is connected to the chip. I would guess if you have 35 volts on the speaker terminals, one rail is not connected.

Remember to measure the output on the speaker terminals with a 10 ohm resistor connected across them.

"only difference is i have left out R3 and C2"

Without R3 and C2 the amplifier will oscillate and get very hot, this will activate SPIKE internal protection circuitry and make popping sounds.

"I have tried putting in R4 and is now left off"

Without R4 the amplifier will latch up to the power supply rail.
