I would suggest you read "The simplest guitar amp" post, which is currently the one right under this.

Nope, not without a preamp
I THINK that the lm386 should work as a preamp. or you could mabye put exremely high gain on the 3875. i've never played with guitar amps before, so this may all be wrong. -Mike |

yes.
it will work fine it will also be one of the best (speaker dependent) non-tube guitar amplifiers you've heard a preamp is NOT essential as guitar output is quite high. however id' reccommend a simple, single op-amp based preamp to add a little gain perhaps - like i said. optional |

You're talkin about the 386 preamp, right?
if you need a 386 amp use the one on my site : http://www.electronet.5u.com go to schematics then lm386 amp. I know it works well and is simple. -Mike |

I used the head phone out from a cheap (us$16.78) portable cd player from Best Buy on to a set of LM3875's.... worked just fine
I also bought, just for testing, a Pioneer quartz PLL tuner from the Goodwill store priced at us$4.99 works just as fine! I was affraid that some short would happen but no! maybe I am doing something wrong with my sets of LM3875 but i have no clue! Jean-Pierre |

all this requires is a single( /dual/quad whatever you've got lying around) opamp, an LM741 (noisy - bad choice. will work tho), LM833 (very low noise, dual opamp) etc. check OnSemi.com. they have a full range of opamps. low noise, high voltage/low voltag. whatever you want p.s. SoundNERD, the descriptions of amplifier classes on your page seem a little strange?! I thought Class A amps where those the were biased so that the transistors are on all the time eliminating crossover distortion (hence they produce a LOT of heat). Class B is where the transistors are off until a suitable signal biases them on (ie they make less heat, plus there crossover distortion as there is no output until the signal amplitude is enough to bias transistors on meaning some signal is not amplied). Class A/B is what gainclones are. I believe it mean they're biased very closely to reduce crossover distortion to a minimum (Class A). They save a lot of power by not drawing current all the time (Class B). Class D also doesn't mean digital - its a common misconception. I believe it means pulse width modulation which is guess is kinda digital as the output is either on or off and you simply modulate it to create sound |

Congratulations!! you're the millionth person to tell me that (with a flashing red background).
In fact, I started a thread in i think solid state forum a couple of weeks ago, and was told that by many. I've been combining school, homework, and working on revising the site. I should really delete that until i get it done. I should have it with the correct info soon. Other than that, do you like the site? I've been working on schematics, so more is comming soon. -Mike |

I went to your site, and tried the modem speed tips. The long command string you have on your site didn't work on my pc. I am running windows 98SE, though. Netzero (my internet provider) told me the modem wasn't configured properly. Does this one only work with 2k (I am going to try it on my 2k laptop)?
Other than that, it's helpful and i like that little dog or whatever it is .Just wondering, how did you make that background? did you have it on your computer, or did you make it? I have wanted to do something like that but am too lazy to draw line by line. Would you mind if I use it on a site I am designing for somebody? Thanks! -Mike |
