Tom, years ago I did a composite amp using the old LM12. It worked well and I was pretty proud of myself for turning a relatively crummy device into something respectable. By comparison, the performance you get out of your Modulus-86 is just phenomenal.
I'm not a big fan of grease if I can avoid it, and like the better grades of Sil-Pad material. Also pricey, but very good is the Aavid phase change compound (Ultrastick). I think it's a filled wax. When the device heats up it liquefies and gives you the minimum possible layer thickness. Better long term stability than grease. Combine that with a heavy anodized aluminum insulator and you can't do much better unless you go to a copper heat spreader.

I agree. The grease is messy. I'd much rather use a Sil-Pad.
