quote of the day.
Sheryl Crow in an interview with a dutch tv-interviewer (Reinout Oerlemans for the dutch - grin): "My studio engineers always do a test when they're finished mixing a song; they put it on a cd, go for a drive and when it sounds good in the car, they're happy. When it doesn't, back to the studio they go." Uhmmm... Anyone? |

I'd say these were people who understand their market.

matjans, I think the comparison with a really good CD is more important than to listen the new records anywhere. Lot of audio enginer think the sound of new songs are very good (maybe the best of...), while don't change the CD to something wich much better. Without comparison we hear what we want

"Uhmmm... Anyone?"
First exposure to new music is radio via boom box or car stereo. If it doesn't sound good on these there will be no mass market for the music. |

My post was intended to show that many studio engineers (or actually record labels) nowadays have other priorities than making a high quality recording.
And of course I'd like to know what you guys think of that. IMHO there are a lot of pop artists that deserve better recordings than the ones we get now. You won't hear me complaining about the quality of mp3's for that matter, it's a great medium for getting to know all kinds of different music/artists and when you like something you buy it. Be that on CD or analogue media. For a pretty good mp3 example try this link (site of a band from switzerland, click sound -> emptyspaces, amazing how good this mp3 sounds. Created with an apple ipod btw). |

I know that some 'pop' records have (or had) the bass around 60Hz boosted so that the track will sound good on a portable radio, the preferred listening device of the audience the music is targetted at.
Of course, that may have changed as you don't tend to see kids walking around with portable radios these days.

Listening to country influenced artists like Sheryl Crow, Bruce Hornsby or Jackson Browne I see myself sitting in a fat cadillac driving down some endless highway savouring the freedom.
Of course the volume is pumped up. And now I also know why Cheers Jens PS.: I really love the sound of her recordings. She´s one of the tasteful songwriters still using good analog recording studios. Although she became a bit more "pop" soundwise it´s still quite minimalistic and raw. Some really brilliant guitar sounds. "it´s hard to make a stand" being my favourite. |

In the early 70's Harry Nilsson did a song - "Spaceman" - where they boosted the bass ( my guess was 120 Hz) and it made AM radios sound like a $1,000,000.00! It got lots of airplay.
(he also did the anamation "the point") |
