I have been looking at semiconductor sites, especially www.st.com. I noticed some odd types of packages, though. One of them is a Flexiwatt and a Multiwatt, such as these here - http://www.st.com/stonline/products/selector/204.htm . There is also the Power-SO such as this - http://www.st.com/stonline/books/ascii/docs/9110.htm . That chip is a dual 75W, yet has no way to connect a heatsink. How would you?
Are any of these chips useable by the hobbyist? Or are their pins too close or small?

you have to do a little more heatsink research -- send ST's support line an email requesting which Wakefield or AavidThermalloy heatsink to use.
I had a similar problem moving to surface mount transistors. In the case of the MJD44H11 and MJD45H11 transistors (somewhat smaller smt versions of OnSemi's D44H11/45) -- a somewhat similar configuration -- Wakefield was very helpful in pointing me to the correct sink -- but it takes a bit of ingenuity in fitting it onto a PCB. Surface mount LM317's also have the same configuration.
Digikey carries Wakefield btw.
