Crossover or filter

Hi, not too sure about this one..
I would have thought that a filter would be much easier to implement than a crossover for someone building a subwoofer amp...

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
i was planning to put an optional 2 pole filter on my gainclone amp to use it solely as a sub amp if need be..

For a sub amp, I suggest Active Filter.
With a few € (euros) you can make it running.

If you go passive (crossover) you may need to spent more than 100 €...

And if you want a sub, it's that you need really low frequencies, right?
So, something that is up from, say, 80 Hz will be reproduced from your main speakers. All freqs below 80 Hz will come up from the sub. Using a crossover you will need a lot of stuff to stop freqs above 80 Hz...

Make a 2nd order low pass filter. It's enough for you needs!

This is pretty much along the lines of what i thought..
So why do people use crossovers?

well, it depedns on what you have available. like if you have 2 channels available. now you'd have to choose between stereo sound, or this active filter. the thing i like about gainclones is that you can get lots of channels for cheap. especially if all you need is a lot of low power channels...
