Default 741 Op Amp Drop in Replacement

I was wondering if some people could recomend me a better peforming drop in replacement for a 741 Op-AMP. I would prefer if it come in a surface mount package rather than a dip.

Hi,
If possible. Can you give us more details about the circuit where you intend to use the OP.
A schematic would be perfect.
Chances are that a high performance OP may become unstable or the like if just "droped in"

Regards / Mattias

I will be using it for active 2nd order Bessel active filter application.

What do you mean by unstable exactly?

Ok. Filter app. What is the highest frequency the filter will output.

OP amps may oscillate from lots of things like impedance on its input , gain / feedback structure & power rail decoupling
to name a few.

I once changed OP amps in a soundcard and it turned into an AM receiver although I checked everything....

15 kHz tops. I will be building both high pass and loss pass circuits with the 741s.

The '741 was never a high-performance device in audio applications, but it was cheap and easy to use.

15 KHz active filters of any complexity, especially the hipass, are really pushing the limits on 741-class devices. If I had to suggest an alternative without any more information to go on, I'd look at the TL07x family. For truly modern parts check out the (former) National LMExxxx series, or OPA604/OPA2604.

"Drop in"?=TL071 .
But you must really post the schematic, for a more complete amswer.
Are you using an old schematic picked up somewhere or designing a new one?

This is what we mean by unstable,
Swapping Op-Amps... you have checked to see it's stable haven't you ?

I'd go along with Dale and JMFahey and recommend the TL071 too. It will be a massive improvement over the 741 in all respects.
