Default Yamamura's amplifier chip?

Read an old review (Positive Feedback)on Yamamura's huge horn speakers and his amplification system.
The review mentioned that inside the power amps were chunky caps, point to point wiring, his famous resistors and ''right in the middle was a chip from an age gone by''.
Apparently the chip was used as a ''CURRENT AMPLIFIER '' rather than the usual voltage amplifier.

Anyone know what this chip might have been??
