To all the aussie's out there. Where do you get all these fancy components from? ie black gate cap's big name resistors and transformers?

Also i here of people getting these chips as "samples". whats the go with this?

Im in perth btw if that is of any help.

I think youll have to look at RS for getting good caps, etc... unless your luck enuf to have someone local.

Maxim (i think) and TI do free samples... NSC also do samples, but you have to pay for the shipping.

WES Components in sydney stock a huge range of servicing parts including Hitano low esr capacitors that I have found to be very good.
They have an overnight bag service too.

transformers wise, Jaycar has 160va 18 0 18v toroids. some folks say they are a bit mechanically noisy but they are ok for most purposes

LM3875T chips, the only Oz source i could find was Farnell. from memory they are about 21 dollars each. many places have gone to stocking the LM3876 which is the version with the mute function and is reported to sound inferior.

I have found Altronics (or Aztronics in SA), to have good quality and a good range of torodials.
I think they are slightly cheaper than Jaycar too.

Looking at sites such as WES components and RS components im wondering if they actually sell to the general hobbyist or do you have to be in a trade of the sorts?

They sell mostly at the trade level but will see to the general public. For WES Components, you will have to call to get prices because they do not have a catalog with non trade prices.

As a Kiwi gatecrashing your thread (!) I find that many parts are best ordered over the net. Jaycar and DSE have a decent range but if you want boutique stuff, you have to resort to the internet.

For caps and tube stuff I like www.angela.com its cheap and good, the nichicon muse range is very good.

Farnell has all sorts of nice things, but triple check the price from other places too. They can be really expensive at times for some things.

I've not had any problems with net orders. Just make sure that your credit card company has a good policy regarding internet fraud and you should be fine.

Apart from Farnell / RS (I have accts) and the rare purchase from Jaycar, almost everything I buy comes from the US or Europe. I've never had an issue or loss with any of the stuff I've ordered from O/S and often it's quicker than ordering locally. Recent PCX, AES and PE orders have been taking on average 5 - 7 working days, only a couple of days longer than it can take from Sydney or Brisvegas to my rural address. Postage isn't too bad either unless you order heavy items, and taking some time to look at the rates system on the usps website can make sure you know the rough cost, and can get people to quote for economy air; express is not usually much quicker.

Heavy stuff like speaker drivers I get sent surface. Again no issues or losses in a very large number of orders.

There are a couple of tube dealers such as David at Retrovox in Wagga that I can recommend (excellent!), but otherwise, it's from O/S unless I luck onto something locally.

Also Rockby in Melbourne for general bits'n'peices.

I have more info on tube related resources, but I suspect this isn't your area of interest.
