Default Digital volume control question

Is it possible to connect a digital volume controll between the amp and speaker? I have speakers in each room of my house and would like to be able to control the volume of each room remotely. The other solution would be to build a separate amp for each room and do the volume control before each amp. Would I need a different power supply for each amp, or could one be shared between 5 different amps? Thanks!

Digital volume control are usually low power devices.
Best before amp than after.

An amplifier in each room with a zoning mixer would be a good solution.
