What's the difference between these two?
As far as i have seen the LM1875 is cheaper and a little weaker. But what else? I'm thinking of a LM1875 as a first project and for powering my CSS EL70

LM1875 is more similar to TDA2030A but higher rails and more expensive. The LM3886 has much higher power dissipation and also has mute capability.

There are a fair number of DIYers who would claim that the LM1875 sounds better than the LM3886 in a basic gainclone circuit. It's subjective, but many people report that the LM3886 is a bit bright and harsh in the upper-mids. It can be tamed, but requires careful component selection, layout and/or circuit topology changes.

Both ICs need an opamp in advance. In case none inverting DC decoupled schematic very dependable on a quality of decoupling capacitors. Also both ICs sounds much better with better power supply capacitors (Nichicon, ELNA).
LM1875 is a good replacement in chines multimedia like Microlab. For the project from scratch I would use LM3886 that provides better bass as well. Somewhere on the forum I read that LM3886 is mimicking Naim amplifier schematics that was always considered (Naim) as a pretty descent piece of equipment in audiophile world. Some diyers like OPA549 better then LM. |

Okay.
The LM1875 is so cheap so i might try to build one further on. Would a 160VA 2 x 18V / 2 x 4.44A be enough? |

No !
both chipamps can and do work very well without an opamp in front. Do not add extra components that are not required.

By the way. I heard some guy talking about not using capacitors since it "slowed down" the mids and higs and that it was better to simply use a larger transformer.
What do you experts have to say about that? |

I say it's rubbish. A correctly made capacitor based power supply is what pretty much every hifi amp uses. The important thing is that the capacitors should be high quality and bypassed with good quality small value capacitors (100nF-470nF). I used 2x4700uF per supply rail for my LM3886 amp
