Most of the older STKs are designed for 8 Ohm operation. In BTL configuration they see half the load. A 4 Ohm speaker will appear as a 2 Ohm load to each of the ICs. You can make up for the lower impedance by reducing the rail voltage, but that reduces the available output power accordingly and makes the BTL effort absurd.

With a 4 Ohm load it appears more promising to use two channels in parallel, if for some obscure reason the power of a single channel should be insufficient.
