How do you hook up an radio shack electret mic?

I have built a headphone amp using the LM386 chip and it works perfect (in attachment). Now I'm wondering how I would add the electret microphone to it with minimal parts I hope.

That mic element needs a power source. A battery/batteries will work fine.

You put the power in on the red lead, if I recall, and the signal comes out on the shielded white lead.

"Shield" is common negative for the signal and the power source.

Your headphone amp may not have enough gain; Radio Shack doesn't list the output level of that element, but that and a wiring diagram should be on the back of the little card it comes in.

You can barely see whats on the back side. It show red wire being power, white is signal and silver being ground. look like there is a resistor going from power to battery and capacitor on the signal line. Does that even sound right though?

Most mic inserts are two wire, the case which is ground and signal ground and the "main" terminal which is both power and signal output. Usually use a resistor of around 2200 ohms to power the mic and take the signal via a cap from the main terminal.

If yours is different then I would do as you suggest... coupling cap on output wire, and a resistor to supply. Try 2200 or thereabouts to begin with.

Wouldn't I need an audio pot? I was wondering if I can use a 500k one cause I can salvage it from an old columbia stereophonic high fidelity. If I can do I need any special resistor or just connect it straight to my amp chip and mic?
