I am building a stereo LM3886 chipamp. I have the kits and need to order the xfrmr now. Since I will use it for modest levels, I am thinking 25-30w/ch.
I am thinking a 2x22V xfrmr will do. I am leaning towards 160VA instead of 200VA. I want the amp to be as compact, small as possible, since I will put it on my desk next to my PC. I originall was going to order from Antek but, I see they don't offer 160VA toroids. Is their an alternate, quality source I should look at in the states? Thx, Rob |

a two channel amplifier with a target maximum output power of 20W to 30W will operate from a 40VA to 120VA transformer.
The only disadvantage of these small transformers is the high regulation. At very low output signals the voltage from the PSU is much higher than nominal voltages would predict. Be careful choosing capacitors that can stand the worst case voltages that may occur. In essence, any transformer from 40VA to 200VA will allow the chipamps to work.

That Avel Lindberg xfrmr looks like exactly what I want. Problem is cost is a bit high ... $48 compared to a 22x2 200VA Antek unit at $29.
Will think it over. Thx, Rob |

I ended up ordering the Avel xfrmr. It's a lower profile xfrmr, which I like.

I've had great success with Avel-Lindberg, Plitron and Antek toroidal power-transformers; these manufacturers' product provide excellent long-term performance. Good luck with your project!
