Hi,
I am trying to build a good quality mid power audio amplifier. I have tested TDA2050 bridge amp, got a good result but not enough. Got lack of bass and high response(the output is giving rich mid range). I have tested the ampli on a a)SONODYNE SX505 sound box(8"woofer + 2" tweeter, 4E impedence and 50W RMS capacity) b)+-18V, 2Amp supply c)input from my PC. Can any one suggest how to improve the performance. Im confused, which chip is best TDA or STK? Should I go for STK402-100 for better result? ![]() Please please some one help me. ![]() diptangshu@gmail.com |

That is why you needed the equally terrible partnering Sonodyne amplifiers to drive them, they had a shrill presentation with zero midrange detail and a very high output impedance, which would create the boom that would hear when the whole thing played together. Really, you're wasting your time trying to build an amplifier for those speakers and expecting high quality reproduction. I get reasonable sound out of locally available products, but it's really not very easy, and you need a bit of EQ to even out the horribly uneven response of most speakers available here. |

Do you suggest any amp which may match with those boxes? or I would go for a new sound box set? If I go for a new box set which speakers(brand) can I get from local market? Now days in Kolkata market good quality product availability is almost NIL. Thanks.....

Sounds like sangram knows those speakers, what he said is probably the big thing.
Other contributing factors may be: Shielded interconnects with too much capacitance between cable and shield will kill the treble. Higher source impedances make this worse. Is that a headphones output, or a line out? When I tried feeding my own chipamps from the headphones out of my personal CD player the bass was lame (and treble harsh). From a line-out they were fine. |

I have heard the big brother 909, the smaller 606 and the 505 and they all sound very ordinary. They were partnering speakers for a mini system sold by a Calcutta-based manufacturer which actually had pretty decent equipment till the 90s, when Anindya took over and turned the direction of the company towards the mass market.
In the Calcutta market you cannot get decent speakers at all. Period. I did manage to squeeze some performance out of some local drivers, but it wasn't much and it took a lot of doing, a lot of Eq and a lot of sweat and cash: Everything was sourced in Calcutta, either recently or fifteen years ago. My advice: Try to see if you can get a partnering amplifier for it from the used market, or use the equaliser in your PC. I wouldn't put any more effort behind those speakers. Sonodyne made some excellent gear - mostly inspired by the Japanese manufacturers of the day - but the SX wasn't it, those were horrible. Good Luck! If you want to chat send me a PM and we can talk about other stuff you can try, but you'll *have* to ditch those 'soundboxes'. I don't want to hurt your feelings, but they aren't capable of quality reproduction.
