Default Sub woofer cutoff on a Chip amp?

Hi, i have a stereo chip amp, sounds great, but i have one major problem right now.

my speakers aren't made for low frequencies so when i crank the volume sound gets pretty distorted.

right now i have all my sound wired through the HTPC, so the sub-woofer can be driven by all inputs easily. but what i was hoping to do was have the subwoofer receive its signal from the chip amp.

the woofer is self powered, but does not have a frequency cut off, as the setup it came with had that in the main box, (pretty lame, i know).

what i need to do is split the signal from the amp's input into hi and low, and send hi to the chip amp boards and low to the sub woofers input.

any ideas?

The answer is yes - you could design and build a line-level crossover. It is essentially a passive crossover designed for the input impedance of the device(s) after it. But because of the effort, time, and cost to do that, you might as well just purchase a cheap pro crossover (like the Behringer CX2310) and be done with it:

that is much more than i would like to spend in a dream world really.
i would much rather spend my time and not my money.

what is the least costly way i could get this done?

and i would also like to ad volume/bass/treble controls.

i was looking at this ESP - Simple High Quality Hi-Fi Preamp

to get that done. i was actually going to print up my own PCB for that too, as i have access to all the equipment to do it for free.

i assume if i made use of that i would put it before the bass filter? so i would still have control over the sub's level from the main panel. or would it be better to split out the bass before this board?

If you have 12v power you can pick up a used automotive one very cheap, some also have EQs on them.

how would this Linkwitz-Riley Electronic Crossover
work for the subwoofer cutoff?

it says on that page it is 'ideal' for subwoofers but the cutoff is 310hz?

ideally i could adjust that variably or at least set it to say 100hz, maybe 90hz.

any input?

If you look on the linkwitzlab page I linked you will see a link to a spreadsheet which will allow you to calculate values for any frequency. I believe. I haven't used it...
