Hello audiophiles,
I found this wonderful chip amp online. I decided create a board layout for it and also build it. during the course of the building, i ran into two problems that i have no idea how to fix, one is; when you turn the unit on, it makes a loud pop out of the speakers. the second; when I touch the 100K pot, it emits lots of static out of the speakers. This could be from being badly grounded, which i also need help on. The project could be found here: HeadBanger Headphone Amp Construction Kit Elaborating on my first question, does anyone know a circuit that would eliminate this Poping sound from switching the switch and turning on the unit? Secondly, could someone help me with grounding. Ive had a look around on the site, and found a couple of guides, (like this one: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/chip-...grounding.html) I can't seem understand what ground track means. I will post pictures of the amp later later. Board layout is an attachment. |

That looks like a DipTrace layout
it's an excellent program. Ground track normally means the common connection that starts and links the ground or outer part of the incoming input signal and all the "common" points along that line. In the circuit in your link it would be all the earth points. Star grounding is a means of eliminating problems caused by the small but significant resistance of the copper print on the PCB. More of an issue with higher powered amps but it does no harm to get it right first time.

Also it will make a noise at switch on... nothing much you can do about that simply. It's caused by the caps charging.
Static noise touching the volume control. Is it a metal pot ? If so either try a plastic type or try connecting the frame of it to the zero (ground) line.
