Hi All,
I am planning to build a subwoofer. I am not having much knowledge regarding amplifiers but know how to assemble one. I already own a STK4141 based amplifier powered by a 20v 5A transformer and i found the sound was a bit OK. Here is my doubt. I am seeing a lot discussion going in here about the LM series(LM3886 specifically). For the new sub which i am going to build which IC i can opt for? Can it be a one from STK series or LM series? The rectified voltage o/p of a 20v 5A transformer is around 36v. Is that enough to power up my SUB or I have to opt for a better power supply? Also i had seen a lot of discussion regarding sub-woofer box design and could not come to a conclusion of which one to use ![]() Please tell me which will be best design or lead me to some good resources regarding the building of Subwoofer boxes. Basically i will be using a 4ohms - 10" or 12" Sub with 100w RMS as i could not find a better one here in INDIA. Friends from INDIA... this is a question for you.... Which is the good sub available in INDIA? I own a DAINTEE 10" sub but still not satisfied with its performance. Which is a best woofer available in INDIA? Please clear my queries..... Rg, Ela |

definitelly LM series
make search here for amps with paralleled LM3886 - you need them , because of increased current capability

Considering that LM series is powerful than the STK series, which series in LM i can opt for?
LM3886 or is there any better IC's which can produce 100w RMS? |

If you are after power, go for the STKs. They are available up to 200 W. Second option are TDA7293/TDA7294 with up to 100 W. The LM series cannot deliver more than ~60 W without bridging or paralleling several of them.
To determine the best subwoofer box design, you need to know the Thiele/Small parameters of the driver. With them you can determine the best box size and the most promising box or no-box type.

How can i choose a subwoofer?
If the size of the subwoofer increases will the o/p increase? Eg: If i am using a 10" 100w subwoofer in place of 12" 100w subwoofer will it make a difference? If so will it be a good difference or a negotiable one? How much ohms sub i have to select? I am planning to go for a 4 ohms one is that good or i have to opt for 2 ohm sub? What should be the frequency of the sub which i am gonna choose? I am planning to look for a one with 20Hz to 100 Hz... will it be OK or i have to opt for a lower frequency? The most important question.... How can i decide a sub is good or not? is there any tests for that without connecting it to an amp? Most of the items available in INDIA are not genuine ones and i can find a lot china made woofers even for which certain vendors are charging it with exorbitant prices... So i want to know whether its good or not by doing some manual tests ..... Thanks In Advance, Ela |
