I posted a spreadsheet that will simulate a linear power supply with the worst-case load, with variable transformer ratings, reservoir capacitance, load resistance, rated output power, and basically everything else you need, which is attached to the post at:

It uses a numerical solution of the differential equations for the circuit. So no approximations are used.

A downloadable PDF file describing the spreadsheet, and the solution method, et al, is attached to the post at:

However, I recommend using LT-Spice, since it is much more flexible and powerful. It is a free download from linear.com.

Question to you guru's if I may.
On the website of TI they show an SMD version of the LM3886, see pic.
But none of the usual suspects have them in their catalog.
Anyone seen one of those, or know where to get them?

Probably custom order by the 1000's for Manufacturers.

If they don't offer samples, can you simply make some by bending the pins of a through-hole version into the correct positions? Or do you need some "real ones"?

Datasheet only lists two types of package and neither is SMT, must be marketing vapourware or special order only.

Let's see what they say.
Maybe they are just testing the waters.
