Default Should we start panic buying National ICs?

Are the current designs going to change?

The designs will hardly change, with nobody left to do that.

The reason for my question is the following. When a company decides to fire all the staff they need for a certain business, the message is, they don't want to do that particular business anymore. In the link above there are many people, who say they are now outdesigning National products, because they have no confidence into that company and its ability to provide support for those products anymore. If there are enough, who do that, the impact on National's analog and especially audio products might well be that they don't give enough turnaround anymore. If that happens, those products will be discontinued faster than anybody can say chipamp.

Next question. If you look at National's homepage, they have six business divisions. Two of them are Amps/Comparators and Audio. What happens to a company, if a third of their business breaks away or is discontinued?

Lightbulb Lets get some!

Hi pacificblue,I would personally buy some(at least 12 as back-up) since now these Ic's are not too expensive from DigiKey.if they discontinue these IC's the providers will increase the price.I do not think you should get more than that. These IC's are very reliable LM3875/LM3886.

Just keep an eye on the web pages of the ICs you like. They will have to offer a lifetime buy before they go completely away. The Overture family of chips have been around forever in semiconductor time and they should stay around for some time. Now the LME stuff might be in trouble. We could never get upper management to understand that the pay back on the LME chips (op amps and drivers) was going to take more than a quarter or two after release but they don't like to think that far ahead. National is not a company to put a good plan into effect and budget for the R & D when it will take a few years to really ramp up business. They look 1 - 2 quarters out and say, what new products are going to get us money. I am sure glad I am no longer there.

I will make a huge stink at the annual meeting, and I mean HUGE, but isn't for quite a while.

Halla has got to go back to Nebraska. All they listen to is pigs out there.

well maybe TI will step up with their BB division and fill the gap if any is left by national.

Being an EE student it seems like when ever I go to design something (not for class for my own stuff) Most of the parts are from TI
