Hello, I would like a brief review of which of the two chips is better (in terms of noise and gain) when used as a microphone preamplifier.
Thank you

Electrons are yellow and more is better!

The LM387 isn't so bad, 1 uV noise. The NE5532 has 5 nV/Hz which is rather close. Personally I would have chosen NE5532.

Right, I got the idea.
I have a mic preamp using lm387 but I will probably replace it with 5532. The next stage in the chain is a ne5532 3-band equalizer, which uses a passive filter section (bass treble high) and the 2 buffers of the 5532 as I/O. I would like to know if an active filter section can be made for the mic using the ne5532, as high quality capacitors are too expensive... any suggestions??

Active Filters or Passisve filters it doesn"t matter you are still going to need Capacitors , probably just as many as a Passive tone controll....
The benefit of a Active filter set up is you can also boost frequencies as well as cut were a Passive filter will only cut .... Cheers |

The NE5534 is a big improvement over the NE5532. They are so darn cheap you can afford to try both.

This comes as a surprise, because the 5532 is the dual version of the 5534. So for one thing they should sound as similar as can be and for another thing they cannot be replaced with each other without major PCB re-design.

ne5532 is a dual units/package and is unity gain stable.
ne5534 is a single unit/package and is not unity gain stable. there may be other differences, for example in bias currents; i haven't checked the datasheets for these in many years. ne55xx series (when properly used) has fairly low thd and can drive low impedance loads. bjt input parts (like the ne55xx series) are low noise for "low" impedances. depending on your surrounding passive components, you may want to experiment with low noise dual jfet parts also. good luck! mlloyd1 |
